Spotify’s free tier gets a big upgrade

Spotify has rolled out a set of major features to users of its free, ad-supported tier globally. These updates give free users more control and flexibility over what they listen to.

Key new features

  • Pick & Play: choose and play specific tracks from any playlist or album.
  • Search & Play: search for any track and play it on demand.
  • Share & Play: tap a shared link and listen instantly.
  • Playlist Cover Customisation: design or customise playlist covers.
  • Daylist: a playlist that adapts to times of day and listening habits.
  • Lyrics: see synchronised lyrics and share snippets.
  • Data Saver: reduce data usage on mobile — helpful in markets where mobile data is costly or capped.

What still remains limited

While the new features are a major step forward, some restrictions remain in place for free users:

  • On-demand daily allocation: Spotify hasn’t disclosed the exact limit, but reports indicate that free users have a daily on-demand allowance. Once used up, playback reverts to restricted mode.
  • Skip limits: After the allowance runs out, users are again capped at six skips per hour.
  • Queue control: Full queue management is still reserved for Premium subscribers.
Ads: The free tier continues to be ad-supported.

Why it matters

These changes make the free tier far more usable and engaging. They improve the listening experience, boost the potential for ad revenue, and strengthen Spotify’s competitive position in markets where free listening is common. But challenges remain: Premium still offers more freedom, and free users may find the time caps and ads frustrating.

Bottom line

Spotify’s free tier is much more usable now, though Premium still holds clear advantages.
