No fewer than 2.5 billion songs were streamed in the first half of 2018 compared to 1.5 bn songs in the first half of 2017. Streaming revenues increased significantly in the first half of 2018, rising by 61.1% to €23.2 million. The lion’s share of €21.1 million comes from premium subscriptions, such as Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music unlimited or DEEZER. Video streams, especially on YouTube, contributed a relatively modest €1.4 million despite high user numbers, while other ad-supported streaming contributed €750,000.

Download revenues declined by 18% to €5.6 million and physical sales declined by 15% to €24.4. For the first time, more than half of the Austrian music market (streaming and downloads) is digital making up 54% of the total market.

Dietmar Lienbacher, President of the Austrian music industry association – IFPI Austria: ‘Around 800,000 Austrian music fans have a streaming subscription, streaming has replaced the CD as the biggest source of revenue, making it all the more important that the same rules apply to everyone on the streaming market and also pay for providers like YouTube licenses.’
