40.3% of Americans listen to podcasts regularly with a 12% growth in the number of listeners in the past 2 years according to Triton Digital. Triton Digital’s U.S. Year-End Podcast Report provides key insights into the growing US podcast landscape over the course of 2023.

Key findings from the U.S. Year-End Podcast Report

  • The number of monthly podcast listeners in the US has increased by 12% in the past 2 years. 40.3% of the US population are monthly podcast listeners
  • The network with the most downloads in 2023 was SiriusXM Podcast Network, the top podcast was NPR News Now and the top new podcast debut was The Deck Investigates.
  • News was the most downloaded genre in 2023, followed by True Crime and then Comedy
  • Podcast listeners were younger, more affluent, more educated, and more diverse than the general population. However, more growth has been seen lately from older Americans and females.
  • YouTube was the fastest growing platform to listen to podcasts. 33.5% of monthly podcast listeners said it was the platform they used most to listen to podcasts
  • YouTube listeners are newer to podcasts. Spotify podcast listeners are younger. Apple Podcasts have more long-time listeners who are higher income

Amongst the facts contained in the report:

  • 94% of podcast listening is done via a mobile device.
  • The top US podcast in 2023 was NPR News Now followed by Crime Junkie at #2 and Dateline NBC in the third spot.
  • NPR had six titles in the US Top 20 Podcasts of 2023 closely followed by SiriusXM Podcast Network with 4 titles.
