Quarter of US adults own a smart speaker according to a report from NPR and Edison Research which found that 60 million US adults (24% of the 18+ population) own at least one smart speaker device. The Winter 2019 Smart Audio Report confirmed continued growth in the smart speaker market with the average smart speaker household now having 2.6 devices, up from 2.3 devices per household at the same time last year. The research also showed that 54% of the US population have now used a voice assistant and that smart speakers and voice assistants across devices are increasingly a part of everyday lives.

The research also uncovered security concerns among both smart speaker owners and non-owners and challenges in discovery of new smart speaker functions or skills. But despite these challenges, smart speaker owners continue to integrate the device in their everyday routines with 69% of smart speaker owners use their device daily.

The full report, which draws from a US national quantitative survey of 1015 representative US consumers aged 18 and over and 708 in-depth interviews during the week of 30th December 2019 and the 5th January 2020, can be downloaded here. You will also be able to find six YouTube videos describing how people use their smart speakers daily.
