gaana sees growth in Indian regional music in 2021 and an increase of 40% in podcast listening according to its end of year report, gaana India Music Trends 2021. The streamer in in its end of year report claims 180 million users and 99 of its artists streaming over 100 million plays during the year. According to a survey by YouGov gaana is the 3rd most listened to audio streamer in India with YouTube and Amazon Prime Music taking up the number 1 and 2 positions. The report goes on to list its Top Ten Artists, Top Ten Songs and Top Ten Albums of the year. Tanishk Bagchi took the top artist slot with Arijit Singh and Neha Kakkar coming in 2nd and 3rd.

Pointing to the importance of audio streaming during the pandemic it highlights two important growth areas:

  • Regional music
  • Podcast listening

Regional music consumption is on the rise with

  • ~40% streams from regional music on gaana
  • 15% rise in Bhojpuri & Haryanvi streams compared to last year

Consumer’s growing appetite for screen-free entertainment saw gaana expanding its library to ~40,000 podcasts. Podcast consumption has increased by ~40% YOY.

Regional markets took to podcasts fast, with the demand from them increasing by 32% in 2021. The genres that dominated podcast charts were Music, Motivation, Stories & Devotional.

Riya’s Retro topped the list of the Most streamed Podcast of 2021
