SomaFM is a San Francisco based internet radio station broadcasting 39 channels of music in a wide range of genres including 70’s, alternative, ambient, Americana, folk, jazz, rock and many more. The station is listener supported relying on voluntary contributions from its listeners and when we tuned in at noon (UK BST) they had some 7.5k listeners. The station offers a wide range of audio formats including 128kbps and 256kbps MP3 and 32kbps 64kbps and 128kbps AAC. There are also specific links for Winamp, Windows Media Player and mobile apps. iOS apps can be found here and Android here.
They have recently started a CD Quality FLAC HLS test stream on their Groove Salad channel playing downtempo and chillout electronica using StreamS encoders. This is the same technology as is being used by Max Radio Society in British Columbia, Canada.
HLS streams may not be supported by your media player or browser and so these streams work fine in VLC but not in foobar for example. We tested the webplayer in Chrome, Edge and Firefox and this worked fine. More information on the test streams and links to their technology supplier can be found here.
